The competition for marketing talent in the tech industry continues. Reflecting on a recent candidate placement, I’ve gained valuable insights into the challenges of hiring the right candidates. Here are some of the key hurdles that need to be addressed when building a high-performing marketing team:

1. Fostering a Culture of Collaboration and Innovation A recent conversation with a hiring manager revealed a key challenge: understanding the strengths and gaps within the existing team. By understanding the team dynamics and insights the successful candidate brought new skills to the role and could learn from other members of the team. This strengthened the team and fostered greater collaboration. The ability to identify the right person who complements existing talent is important in building a collaborative and innovative team.

2. Build a team with a diverse skill set When hiring it’s important to assess what is the priority for the role. In this case, we discussed how important client relationship skills were which became a primary focus for the role. Candidates who demonstrated strong client relationship abilities could learn some of the more technical areas over time from other members of the team.

3. Cultural Fit: Adapting to a Fast-Paced Environment The ever-changing nature of tech companies requires individuals who can adapt and thrive in a changing environment.  During the hiring process the focus was on assessing candidates' ability to collaborate with different teams.

Conclusion

Building a strong marketing team for a tech brand in 2025 requires a strategic approach, a keen understanding of the skills needed, and a focus on collaboration. By addressing key hiring challenges such as fostering innovation, balancing diverse skills, and ensuring cultural fit you can create a team the right team. The key is to hire people with the right skills that enjoy collaboration and want to improve and upskill. This will add to the overall success of the marketing team
